I'm watching this Frontline documentary on policing and they're pointing out that Newark mayor Ras Baraka opposes calls to abolish policing. My question is: Do ANY mayors support abolition? CAN mayors support abolition, given their dependence on police? I think the answer is no.
Let's think this through logically. What would happen if the mayor of a major (or minor) U.S. city publicly supported police abolition? Wouldn't their safety immediately be placed in danger by the same force that they oversee?
The mayor of NYC capitulates to police pressures 99% of the time. When he even whispered a word of mild critique, the police responded by doxxing his daughter. Mayors are not generally free to oppose policing. Doing so isn't safe. Why isn't there more discussion about this?
