For cis people who may be confused as to why people are suddenly angry with the author of Harry Potter - tl;dr she hates trans people. transphobia content warning and massive thread warning 1/10
specifically, she& #39;s fully bought into a specific feminist movement that attaches womanhood to the body you were born in. this movement doesn& #39;t accept the existence of trans people - they& #39;re seen as confused at best, and deviants and sex offenders at worst 2/10
if it were just private beliefs, it would something you can reason and argue against. but they& #39;ve formed a concerted online hate group. they control a shocking number of accounts in order to flood hashtags, fill peoples& #39; mentions with abuse, and inflate their support 3/10
they send death threats and abuse to prominent trans folk. they try to get trans-inclusive charitable organisations defunded. they want to remove legal protections for trans people. they search keywords to find people to verbally abuse. hell, i& #39;m worried about this thread 4/10
it& #39;s racist - they dismiss and belittle indigenous/non-western concepts of third genders or other gender non-conformity. it& #39;s colonialist - sometimes you& #39;ll see a whole lot of british people invade nz twitter to tell nz politicians or organisations how they should act 5/10
if you look at their profiles, it& #39;s an honestly creepy obsession. and they direct all this hate towards a minority group who are one of the most discriminated against. one at risk of violence bc of these attitudes and who are still fighting for human rights 6/10
i personally despise that they use the language of feminism and instead of uplifting minority voices, they& #39;re a privileged group using it to dehumanise and silence a vulnerable minority. it makes me angry that they are happy to hurt people i love 7/10
j k rowlng amplifies these messages to her massive audience and these people now see her as a leader of their movement. they& #39;re buying physical ads in the UK to express support for her and it& #39;s to the point where mentioning her in a twitter bio is a signal 8/10
her new book has a serial killer who dresses in women& #39;s clothing. these people regularly describe trans women as men in dresses, which is wrong and harmful. reinforcing these stereotypes and fears and spreading this misinformation at a worldwide scale is horrible 9/10
by joining with these people, jk rowlng is contributing to mainstreaming transphobia. trans women are women. trans men are men. don& #39;t support hate 10/10
A thread that goes into more detail about why JK in particular is significant to the movement https://twitter.com/LaurakBuzz/status/1306518303683219456">https://twitter.com/LaurakBuz...
And this thread talks about the effects of speaking out as a trans woman on the internet and being targeted by transphobes https://twitter.com/CateSpice/status/1306509866949685248">https://twitter.com/CateSpice...
