For cis people who may be confused as to why people are suddenly angry with the author of Harry Potter - tl;dr she hates trans people. transphobia content warning and massive thread warning 1/10
specifically, she's fully bought into a specific feminist movement that attaches womanhood to the body you were born in. this movement doesn't accept the existence of trans people - they're seen as confused at best, and deviants and sex offenders at worst 2/10
if it were just private beliefs, it would something you can reason and argue against. but they've formed a concerted online hate group. they control a shocking number of accounts in order to flood hashtags, fill peoples' mentions with abuse, and inflate their support 3/10
they send death threats and abuse to prominent trans folk. they try to get trans-inclusive charitable organisations defunded. they want to remove legal protections for trans people. they search keywords to find people to verbally abuse. hell, i'm worried about this thread 4/10
it's racist - they dismiss and belittle indigenous/non-western concepts of third genders or other gender non-conformity. it's colonialist - sometimes you'll see a whole lot of british people invade nz twitter to tell nz politicians or organisations how they should act 5/10
if you look at their profiles, it's an honestly creepy obsession. and they direct all this hate towards a minority group who are one of the most discriminated against. one at risk of violence bc of these attitudes and who are still fighting for human rights 6/10
i personally despise that they use the language of feminism and instead of uplifting minority voices, they're a privileged group using it to dehumanise and silence a vulnerable minority. it makes me angry that they are happy to hurt people i love 7/10
j k rowlng amplifies these messages to her massive audience and these people now see her as a leader of their movement. they're buying physical ads in the UK to express support for her and it's to the point where mentioning her in a twitter bio is a signal 8/10
her new book has a serial killer who dresses in women's clothing. these people regularly describe trans women as men in dresses, which is wrong and harmful. reinforcing these stereotypes and fears and spreading this misinformation at a worldwide scale is horrible 9/10
by joining with these people, jk rowlng is contributing to mainstreaming transphobia. trans women are women. trans men are men. don't support hate 10/10
