Wanna explain a common talking point climate deniers like to say: “if it gets warmer we’ll just move more northward and grow food there”

Yeah this doesn’t work. Soil takes millions of years to develop. In fact the loss of soil is major problem worldwide
“moving north and growing crops there” doesn’t work because the more northern regions that haven’t been able to grow much (such as siberia or northern canada) don’t have the nutrient rich soils that make growing our staple crops possible.
“well can’t we just make a bunch of fertilizer or nutrient rich soil?” no. it’s actually proven extremely difficult for even the brightest minds to create a working and practical growing medium.
we were able to sustain much of our soil for this long pretty much because Indigenous peoples figured out sustainable farming practices for their Native regions. colonialism has fucked that up extensively
throughout history there have been quite a few civilizations that learned the hard way how unsustainable farming depletes soil. and then they either died out, migrated elsewhere and started over, or joined other existing communities elsewhere.
Soil depletion has become a major problem in Africa. (Take a guess at the causes. Yep. basically colonialism & climate change)
this is extremely simplified bc i am typing this im the shower lol. but my point is, no, we cannot just grow all our food in higher latitudes as the climate warms
