Yesterday while covering for a rural emergency room, I helped to diagnose, investigate, and treat high blood pressure, manage diabetes, give treatment for an UTI, and flush out someone's ear wax. These are issues that typically should not be dealt with in ER. 1/n
But I cannot blame these patients for coming to ER for the non-urgent issues, because they have no family doctors to help them. I make more money doing the same work in ER than in my office. When people come to the hospital, they need to register, be triaged, 2/n
be assessed by nursing, etc. which all cost our health care ++money than if these issues are dealt with by their family doctors. Building a strong medical home is critical to an effective and cost-efficient health care for all Canadians. 3/n
But instead, @Alberta_UCP is attacking primary care. They say that Albertans' health needs are not complex. They say that Albertans' mental health issues are not severe. They say that all these changes are necessary to save money. But what they fail to realize is that 4/n
it is far more expensive to fix the fences after all the horses have run away. Investing in Albertans' health now makes them healthier, so that we all suffer less in the long-run. #stophurtingAlbertaKenney Strop driving our doctors away for your Americanized health care. 5/n
