Anyone can write. There's no super special talent like "you got it or you don't" - writing is agony for every writer. You just have to push through and be willing to try. Don't get stuck in your head, just write what you think.
If someone thinks they're a good writer or a bad writer, its about how effective you are in conveying your ideas. There's some craft to this, and you only get better by doing it, but a lot is that you have to be clear on what *you* think. Confused ideas will make for bad writing.
The good thing about writing is that it actually helps you clarify your own ideas. If you want to write something clearly, you have to be clear on what you think. Most of the time when I start, I'm not clear. The benefit is by trying I sort out my ideas.
When you have an argument you want to make, if you're gonna write effectively you gotta be able to explain what it is you're responding to (and you have to understand it) and then what you're saying that's different. "They say, I say". Think of writing like a conversation.
Most people are fine at having a conversation and saying what they think. When you ask them to write, the biggest hang up is that they think that they try writing like they think they're supposed to. Fuck it. Write like you talk (at least at first).
Bad writing, and let's be honest its often left writing, is a goddamn mess. That's either because 1) your ideas aren't clear to yourself so you can't explain them, or worse 2) you're afraid of saying what you think so you use all kinds of passive language and big words to hide it
You should write. Don't get hung up and say "I don't think I'm a good writer" or "Who cares what I think?". Most professional writers suck. They have stupid ideas or they've done nothing. They're writers because they just write a lot. A person who cares (and tries) will be better
If you write and submit - you're ahead of 95% of people. Read what you wrote before you submit it. Try and tighten it up. Read it aloud to yourself. Does it sound right? If not, do some work before sending it off.
