I get the impulse - and I support it in principle - but I think a lot of the “forget Harry Potter, let it die” takes I’ve seen online are really underestimating exactly what the franchise is at this point, because I don’t think it’s stoppable.
This is a franchise that has made actual billions of dollars. There’s literally as many Potter movies as there are Star Wars movies. There’s hundred-million dollar theme parks that anchor their locations. Every chain store I’ve been to has dedicated displays to this day.
Like, there’s a reason “read another book” became a thing, you know? It’s part of the cultural lexicon and I don’t know how to get it out.
Not saying this is a good thing - personally won’t be sending Rowling any more money, and I’ve tried to spread this to other people. I just don’t know how to grapple with the size and impact of the franchise in a way that’ll have effect, because I don’t think it can be ignored
Anyway, not trying to call folks out or whatever, I just feel frustrated by the sheer size of this thing. I don’t know what to do, but I don’t feel like the solution is to turn our backs and hope it’ll go away.
