Do you like Marty O’Donnell? I've been a big Marty fan ever since the release of the soundtrack for Halo: Combat Evolved. Before that, video game music didn’t really stand out to me, but Marty brought a whole new take to the scene. Artsy and intellectual.
But it was on Halo 3 where Marty's presence became more apparent. I think One Final Effort was Marty's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums.
Christy, take off your robe. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Marty and Salvatori. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of atmospheric craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting,
his next album hits a new peak of professionalism with the ODST soundtrack. Sabrina, why don't you dance a little. Take the saxophone of Deference for Darkness. In this song, Marty addresses the solitude and loneliness not just war but modern society in general can bring.
Covenant Dance is the most moving pop song of the 2000s, about truth and reconciliation. The song is extremely uplifting. Their rhythms are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Christy, get down on your knees so Sabrina can see your asshole.
Marty's career after Halo seems to be more tragic as Activision did him wrong, in a dirty way. Especially apparent when the Destiny soundtrack is stacked against the Bungie Halos. Sabrina, don't just stare at it, eat it.
But I also think Halo works best within the confines of the original Marty-Salvatori artist team, and I stress the word “artist”. This is Tip of the Spear, a great, great song, a personal favorite.
