Our agenda for the night
We’re starting intros and asking participants ‘What does safety look/feel/taste/smell/sound like to you?’
Some participant answers:

-Safety tastes like a freshly plucked pear from my neighbor’s tree

-Safety smells like the air after rainstorm

-Safety sounds like a laugh & a shared story

What do you think when you hear/see ‘community policing’?
Community policing is public relations for cops. This method of policing coincided with the militarization of police forces.
National Night Out was actually birthed from community policing, which allows for them to spread propaganda that the institution of policing keeps us safe. #SafetyIs
We’re briefly giving some introduction to abolition and have shared this quote

“We have to talk about liberating minds as well as liberating society” - Angela Y. Davis
Now folks are going into breakout rooms to talk with their community!

The two questions being posed are: What does safety look like for you & your community? What resources would you need to get there? #SafetyIs #WeKeepUsSafe
We’re reconvening and now people are sharing back so many great answers.

Common answers were resources, trainings on deescalating, meeting people’s basic needs (housing, healthcare, education)

I encourage people to think of these questions on their own as well
Now the reflection question after our large group discussion: Instead of spending money on police, what would you spend it on to keep our community safe?
Quick break and people have decided to tell dad jokes in the comments #SafetyIs
Now we’re back from break, giving people an intro to National Night Out for Safety and Liberation. Shoutout to @ellabakercenter and their excellent resources. #SafetyIs
There’s a couple of ways to get plugged into local National Night Out for Safety and Liberation:
1. Host your own event
2. Attend a meeting that somebody else is hosting
3. Educate friends, family, and community through personal convos
