fall is rapidly approaching the American Eastern Seaboard. you know what that means: pumpkin spice, beautiful leaves, and hordes of prestigious and wealthy foreign affairs institutions offering internships for little to no pay. Let’s name some :)
actually before we start let’s briefly recount why it’s inexcusable for any institution with endowments as large as these (do not @ me with “muuuuh endowments arent liquid assets they’re actually suuuper poor”)
the military-industrial-think tank-consulting complex LOVES diversity theater, but rarely does it take substantive steps to address the overwhelming wealthy whiteness of its corps. Internships are often a key stepping stone to this world. You know what’s f-cking depressing to do?
to explain to earnest people in my DMs that often a key step in this field is one of those internships, which many people simply cannot afford. I could, and others more qualified probably could not.
Anyways if you care about diversity but refuse to take concrete actions to open up entryways to lower-income students, who are more likely to be nonwhite, you do not actually care. So anyways:
First up we have @CSIS continuing to opt for unpaid labor this year. They were not happy with me for tagging them earlier this year. “Times are tough” you have tens of millions of dollars and I expect better from y’all
annnnd @KissingerInst does not appear to have reopened its internship after COVID but rest assured @TheWilsonCenter more broadly is still resolutely committed to not paying (most) people fair recompense for their work
the @CarnegieEndow thinks because it’s abroad it doesn’t matter, thus @CarnegieMEC coming in with several unpaid positions in Beirut
the @StimsonCenter will maybe pay for the bus, but not any work you do 💕😌
