Take your monthly gross salary, multiply it by 12. How much did you get? How do you feel? Sad? Okay don’t worry convert it to dollars, are you sick yet? Good. Now remember even that is not all yours, take out your annual income tax. Do you feel like beating up a politician?
If you are in the middle income class, on average you are between GHS3.5k an GHS6.5k a month if all your entitlements are spread out over the 12 months. So let’s average it out at 5k a month. That’s 60k annual. $10.3k as at today’s exchange rate. It’s Terrible, fucking terrible.
And guys this is very generous, most people in Accra striving to do well, build nice families etc earn between 1.5k and 2.5k, it’s beyond terrible. About 63 years of independence, 28 years of democratic rule and here with such a stinking economy.
The upper class in Ghana is very small. The average middle class Ghanaian makes less than 100k cedis a year. That’s 17.2k dollars a year as at today’s rate. So imagine what poor looks like. It’s a terrible situation we are in but most people just think it is what it is.
Our problem in my opinion is, we don’t know what good governance and leadership is. We’ve never had a functioning system that truly elevated people’s well being, so most living Ghanaians don’t even know what the standard they should be comparing our situation to is.
And that’s why we keep recycling these money grabbing politicians. That’s why after 63 yrs of independence and 28 yrs of democratic rule we have an economy that always needs saving. It truly is sad when you deep it every now and then.
But we shut up and keep it moving I guess.
