Today I saw a bookseller catalog with an entry for a scientist who was also a woman that said after 2 brief paragraphs "we could not find anything else about [the author]" Well, this is a thread to rectify that: sources for researching women in science! #rarebooks #histstm (1/11)
The obvious one is the Dictionary of Scientific Biography, or DSB. It's woefully out of date - one just has to read the entries for Caroline Herschel or Margaret Bryan to see what I mean. (2/11) https://catalog.lindahall.org/permalink/01LINDAHALL_INST/19lda7s/alma991157063405961
My current favorite is Ogilvie's "Biographical Dictionary of Women in Science," which was edited by two women (take that, DSB), and has great primary and secondary sources (3/11) https://catalog.lindahall.org/permalink/01LINDAHALL_INST/19lda7s/alma993398223405961
Ogilvie also has an older work, "Women in Science," with good information as well (4/11) https://catalog.lindahall.org/permalink/01LINDAHALL_INST/19lda7s/alma99319353405961
Also good is Haines' "International Women in Science," (5/11) https://catalog.lindahall.org/permalink/01LINDAHALL_INST/19lda7s/alma993724133405961
Useful but a little hard to use is Herzenberg's index to women scientists, (6/11) https://catalog.lindahall.org/permalink/01LINDAHALL_INST/19lda7s/alma99350163405961
And to round out the biographical dictionaries, Proffitt's "Notable Women Scientists," (7/11) https://catalog.lindahall.org/permalink/01LINDAHALL_INST/19lda7s/alma993724123405961
I also really like the @GrolierClub catalog of their show "Extraordinary Women in Science & Medicine," (9/11) https://catalog.lindahall.org/permalink/01LINDAHALL_INST/19lda7s/alma998484663405961
That's NINE subject specific sources, many of which send you to other, more in depth articles and monographs. Please add to the thread, rt, and share so we never have to roll our eyes at "we dont know anything about a woman who was also a scientist"! (11/11)
