Let’s talk about how I became an Afro Queen. I was a straight-haired girl until my last relaxer* in 2014.

*Relaxer is a (TOXIC AF) chemical that permanently straightens your hair & it became popular in the Black community because of Eurocentric beauty standards
Our natural hair & styles like braids were deemed as unprofessional, untidy and just plain ugly and that’s a battle we’re still fighting today. World Afro Day is all about celebrating the beauty and versatility of Afro hair & raising awareness of hair discrimination!
Today I’m celebrating my afro! In 2014, I didn’t commit to the fro but I was learning more about how to properly take care of my hair and I was curious to see what my natural hair would look like with proper love and care. Please enjoy these snippets of the journey to the afro!
2014 ended up being my last relaxer before transitioning to natural hair. I transitioned for 11 months and bantu knot-outs became my signature style to blend the thicker, curly hair growing from my roots and my straight (and very damaged), relaxed ends
Then I cut off my straight ends in August 2015 and started rocking the fro!
I swear I watched every natural hair video on YouTube while I learnt how to keep my hair healthy and growing. I looked like this every weekend because natural hair requires time and consistent love and care to flourish
I don’t usually wear my hair in its naturally curly state because it can get tangled very easily and getting those tangles out can cause breakage if you don’t do it right. But here are different degrees of curls at random times in my hair journey
When I do wear my hair out, I mostly wear it in stretched styles like twist outs. So the next few tweets are twist outs in chronological order because there have been many many twist outs!
Part 2
And some more
I’ve grown to love my hair and little did I know my hair journey would be the beginning of my self love journey. It’s not just hair for me. It’s accepting that my hair is enough just the way it grows out of my scalp without going to extreme lengths to straighten it!
I’m so confused I think twitter glitched and posted 2 separate threads instead of one 😭😭 https://twitter.com/cheyennepolius/status/1305941832921165826
