In celebration of #Beijing25, the Center for Women's Global Leadership (CWGL) conceptualized and launched a process to develop a new way of mobilizing in the post-Beijing era with the launch of the Feminist and Women’s Action Plan ( #fwMAP). THREAD:
This initiative, which was launched in collaboration with co-driver Soon-Young Yoon @yooncsw, Chair of the Board at the Women's Environment and Development Organization, puts women’s human rights and feminist values at the center of organizing for gender equality.
It aims to build on existing guarantees of human rights and expand their application to women’s lived experiences with: a multidisciplinary and intersectional approach; a strong focus on accountability; & strategies to connect different movements by breaking silence.
Melissa Upreti @melissaupreti, CWGL’s Senior Director for Program & Global Advocacy, & co-author Soon-Young Yoon @YoonCSW, emphasize: 2020 must be a “game-changing year, an opportunity for the feminist & women’s movement to produce a transformative framework & new alliances.”
@Melissaupreti & @YoonCSW note that as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the historic 1995 Fourth World Conference on Women, when 189 countries signed on to the Beijing Platform for Action, "the very premise of women’s rights as human rights is currently being challenged."
The #fwMAP is driven by the perspectives of local activists to define an agenda that calls for profound structural changes in all spheres (political, economic, social, and cultural), & as a counter to the political backlash & organized attempts to roll back women’s human rights.
To date, #fwMAP, with the support of NGO-CSW ( @NGO_CSW_NY), has hosted a range of activities including a series of global dialogues, taking a multi-disciplinary and cross-cutting approach.
These dialogues have focused on the profound structural changes that are needed for the realization of women’s rights as human rights, keeping in mind that this will also require holding the international community, governments, and local authorities to account. #fwMAP
