For my son his 2 year prison sentence has been a complete waste of time. So many missed opportunities. He went to prison for selling drugs to pay for a weed habit - he got the weed habit to mask the pain of rejection from his father. Whilst in prison he was able to access drugs
That he would not have touched on the outside. The drug service provided was group sessions where football was the topic and individual sessions workbooks! Absolutely not worth the paper they are printed on! No counselling offered to deal with the root of his addiction
Before lockdown work consisted of cutting labels out of clothes, overlocking sewing, an industrial cleaning course. The only course ppl wanted was barbering but it was impossible to get onto. His sentence plan was merely a box ticking exercise and he rarely saw his offender
Manager. No parenting courses on offer to help prisoners realise the impact prison has on their children. I know not every prisoner wants to change but there is many who do.
If you are a prison governor I urge you to look very closely at the work, education, counselling services and addiction services your prison offers. Because providing good services will reduce the recidivism rate. If you don’t address the root cause of the addiction
you can’t possibly expect that person to be able to abstain
