As the UN marks its 75th anniversary and the start of this session of #UNGA , the international community needs to put its money and attention where its mouth is - ensuring precious resources reach those fighting COVID on the frontlines.
If every leader of a G20 country dedicated a fraction of what they've invested domestically to global efforts, progress could be achieved.
In the next 6 months fragile countries should be center stage. If we don't beat this virus in Syria or Yemen or Ethiopia we don't beat it in the richer parts of the world.
We must equally provide urgent support to health and other needs beyond COVID: growing hunger and malnutrition, the spread of other deadly but preventable diseases; increasingly imperiled global livelihoods; overcoming growing education gaps.
As with any crisis, women and girls experience the effects and aftershocks differently. While the UN gears up to celebrate Beijing +25, it is imperative that we not only celebrate the progress made toward gender equality, but that we ensure no one is left behind in years to come.
Finally, serious diplomatic muscle must be put behind a global ceasefire, which UN SG @antonioguterres has called for repeatedly over the course of this pandemic. No effort to beat COVID-19 can be successful while fighting continues to threaten civilians and hospitals.
As we head into #UNGA week, and as we mark the UN's 75th anniversary, more, not less, of the global cooperation it represents is needed to fight this virus and its nefarious impacts globally. We can't beat it anywhere until we beat it everywhere.
