BBC publishes 2019/20 annual report with diversity stats.
Lots to get through and will do in depth blog analyzing them in a few days but a few headlines:
1. BBC have separated out BAME stats into Black, Asian, White... for the first time (very useful)
2. BBC Studio stats are usually the most scrutinized as this division makes programmes. Last year they came under heavy criticism for combining Studios and Worldwide (sales dept) effectively hiding the stats of who makes the programmes. They have separated them again (good news)
3. The BBC still does not separate editorial and non-editorial roles and so the diversity of who makes the programmes is still an approximation based on broader division stats.
4. At first glance in appears that the amount of programmes made by independent productions companies has increased - more than 50% - (still need to double check) and there are no diversity stats on the production companies who make content for BBC.
5. Good news, overall non-White diversity has increased in most important categories and overall. Not massively, but I would be suspicious of massive number swings.
6. Despite the good news leadership roles in BBC Studio productions are still so low for Asians and Blacks that it is just marked by a *
7. Retention is still an issue. Black people, Asian people are still leaving at a faster rate than their white counterparts and this might be because they are both more likely to be employed on short term contracts than their White colleagues.
8. Summary:
BBC head count ethnicity diversity is moving in the right direction.
It still has serious problems re. leadership.
It still has serious problems re. retention.
These numbers are becoming less important as more productions are made by independent companies.
I will go through the diversity stats, not just ethnicity, over the next few days
