As we reckon with the lack of LGBTQ representation in media, it brings me great pleasure to inform you that Gentefied basically OPENS with a depiction of two queer women in a loving relationship (thread)
Meet Ana and Yessika. They are introduced (literally less than two minutes into the show) with a same-sex kiss. In a world where LGBTQ representation is still considered “a risk,” this MATTERS.
Seeing Ana and Yessika support each other through their ups and downs is such a beautiful thing to see. It also affirms that Latinx LGBTQ exist, nonwhite LGBTQ people exist, and “representation” is so much more than white gay men.
Their relationship is groundbreaking in a lot of ways. But my personal favorite? It’s revealed that they’ve had a crush on each other since they were kids. Queer kids having crushes! Queer kids being in supportive relationships! It’s incredible
That doesn’t mean their relationship is perfect (spoiler: it isn’t), but seeing two brown women in love, and having their community validate that love, just feels like vaporub on the soul.
growing up Latinx, you never get to see yourself on screen. but growing up queer and latinx and wanting to see something where the lesbians don't die at the end -- hoo! forget it. this show is life saving. ¡Staneamos!
