I need everyone to experience a meat eating spree in the Eastern Cape. You will either be disgusted or you will be converted.
For my grandmother's funeral we slaughtered 22 sheep and a cow. The smell of meat clung on the curtains for days.
My grandmother died at 99, she was the matriarch of our family and the village, she had been a mid wife. A lot of the sheep were donated towards the funeral and generally it is uncustomary to keep anything intended for a funeral it must be eaten.
There is the meat on people's plates. Then there's just random meat in served to guests post food. Like dessert but it's just meat. If there is some left over, people can take as umphako but funeral meat as umphako is discouraged. Mostly its eaten.
