It is essential to understand that even if you don't think what she is saying is good. You could think she is very misguided in ways that hurt people, but still recognise that she is trying to help people. Then you can respond to what she saying & show why it's not helping.

This is particularly important because while formulating your argument against her position, you will need to honestly consider whether there is anything valid in there & if so, adjust your own argument to accommodate it. If GC fems do the same to you, progress can happen.

If you find yourself saying 'All we're asking is for you to shut up,' think about whether that would be a convincing point that anyone could make about something you think it's important to speak out against. Racism? Homophobia? Pineapple on pizza?

Then realise that the other person is saying what they're saying because they think it matters & not because it just dribbled out thoughtlessly & 'We're just asking you to shut up" is not a valid response. Then address the ideas.

It is extremely unlikely that Rowling just suddenly decided to say things that the current dominant discourse would regard as transphobic for no reason apart from to hurt trans people, draw a load of abuse down on her own head & alienate herself from colleagues & friends.

She has clearly decided that this is a significant human rights issue of our age that she needs to speak out about & support the feminists already addressing it who do not have her power & influence DESPITE the enmity it would produce & the important contacts it would alienate

And no, saying that this counterproductive, unethical, dogmatic & spiteful attitude comes from both sides is not an attempt to ignore the reality that it is the trans activists who have the power & are abusing it to silence, threaten & punish GC fems for their speech.
