Re: Freelancing + 10K per month. I’m not saying it’s not possible or that I know what everyone is doing to hit these numbers but before you pay anyone a consulting fee ask bc some people’s main hustle is the consulting. It wasn’t that long ago that Anna M-rch happened...
@yumcoconutmilk put together a 👌🏽 thread on how to hit 10K monthly but I see a lot of people in the mentions who’ve had issues breaking that in a year, so let me add some tips for those in the earlier stages. I never regularly broke 10K but...
I also went after small to mid-sized ad agencies in my city who didn’t have a copywriter on staff but occasionally had projects large enough that warranted one. Easy, fun money without the stress of agency life.
I also suggest keeping a spreadsheet of what’s coming in across a 3 month span and pitching an cold emailing to build up your pipeline of opportunities to help you hit your $$ goals.
I was consistently making 5K+ per month before I decided to become a professor and get not-trash health insurance. My first year I worked nonstop and my 2nd year I worked half as much and made 2x as much money...
I stopped taking pieces that paid less than $300 unless they could be done in less than an hour. I used the network I built the previous year to focus on places that paid 50¢-$1/word. I’ve never received that for print, but corporate blogs like Slack had that kind of budget.
Another reason to up your $ per piece is the admin work associated with all those invoices and heaven forbid if you have to sink hours into chasing down $100.
I also, shifted more of my business into content writing. I upped my hourly rate by $50 every time I took on a new client. Then, I established monthly retainers. 1K minimum per month per client, whether they used their hours or not.
I added up my monthly expenses and lands an anchor client that covered them to give me stability from month to month so I had to hustle less. That was a major key. And allowed me to say no to shit that wasted my time.
