Hello! Here's my occasional thread on coronavirus stats globally.

Today:

- Peru overtakes Belgium as worst-performing country for deaths.
- Denmark and the Netherlands enter 3rd waves.
- Russia: Deaths rising again.
- Eastern Europe “out of control.”
Big picture: Cases are in an elevated plateau globally. In the last few days, new cases have been technically rising.

Deaths remain elevated but have declined recently.
Here are the top 10 most affected countries. The UK, once in the top 5 worst, has fallen to 14th!
Deaths by 1 million/pop:

- Peru has overtaken Belgium as the worst-performing country (excluding micronations).

- Note the influx of South American countries.

- US looks like it will overtake UK.
US: “Standout” states where new cases are on the rise: Delaware, Wisconsin, North Dakota, Nebraska, Utah. [Chart via Pantheon Macroeconomics]

Cases mostly falling in rest of the US.
Western Europe: “Deaths remain low and stable, & hospitalization rates are much lower than in the spring. The no. of people hospitalized in Madrid, for example, has risen but is now about 1/7 of the April peak" even tho cases are higher — Ian Shepherdson, Pantheon Macroeconomics
Eastern Europe: "cases are out of control" [via Ian Shepherdson, Pantheon Macroeconomics]
US: Continued good progress downward in new cases.

Deaths have stopped declining and hit a plateau. The average daily low in July was 522. Today it’s 781.
India: Cases still rising.

Deaths heading to 1500 per day.
Brazil: Things are getting better! Cases well below the peak.

Deaths have declined by about 20% from the peak.
Russia: Cases rising again, deaths are too. Second wave in progress.
Peru: Past the peak but cases remain elevated. Not clear whether the decline has stopped or not.

Good progress on deaths though.
Colombia: Cases making good progress downward.

Deaths in solid decline.
Mexico: Cases in slow decline.

Deaths remain elevated although below peak.
South Africa: New cases now below 1000 per day, down from a peak of 13000+ per day.

Deaths now heading to the low double figures.
Spain: Second wave cases persisting but seem to be under control.

Deaths running at 47 per day. Not great, but not as bad as the first wave either.
France: Yikes. Second wave of cases now worse than the first (probably because testing capacity now better).

Deaths in the low 30s per day — not following cases up.
UK: Cases now running at 3000 per day.

Deaths are still in the low double figures.
Australia: Cases are now down into low double figures again.

Second wave deaths were notably worse than the first.
Denmark: Technically, Denmark is now in its third wave.

Deaths remain very low, however.
Czechia: Cases out of control but deaths remain low.
Sweden: Cases and deaths are low.
Netherlands: Heading into a Denmark-style 3rd wave.

But very low deaths.
Israel: Cases rising exponentially and deaths are up too. [via Pantheon]
