Interested in European sleeper trains? Watch this excellent presentation by Kurt Bauer & @svenPoe of ÖBB about the challenges and opportunities of running & expanding sleeper trains in Europe:
- Nightjet successful, high customer satisfaction.
- Complex to operate. Differing labour laws, nighttime engineering work.
- Profitable, profitability a challenge but a challenge they can meet.
- Essential to work with partners. Nightjet network wouldn't exist without SBB.
- Not a level playing field: Budget airlines pay no fuel tax.
- Differing approaches to track access charges for night trains in different countries.
- Absolutely essential to have eco-friendly, night-train-friendly government policies.
- Can't sustain night trains in longer term with endlessly-refurbished 40 year old couchette cars.
- ÖBB realise they're taking a big risk in investing in new night trains, but one they believe in and can make work.
- New Nightjet trains being built by @SiemensMobility cover all bases: Sleepers, family 4-berth, mini-suites (individual capsules).
- Covid-19 has vindicated mini-suites = sole occupancy at couchette prices. OBB believes it overcomes key reluctance to use night trains = privacy.
