How I got in and out of debt.Truth is life happens and unfortunately it& #39;s easy to get into debt. Being the first born and graduate in my family, when I got my first job as a graduate at a bank, I became the bread winner at home (parents business had failed) (Thread)
My first job out of varsity as a graduate at a bank was great, induction entailed getting a banker who immediately told me what facilities I qualified for i.e credit card (R40k limit) & personal loans. I took the credit card and got myself a Retirement annuity.
Personal loan (Revolving loan as long as I paid the minimum I could access more debt).I used to settle outstanding varsity fees of over R42k.Used the credit card to go shopping for new work clothes, bailing out parents failed business & to settle outstanding creditors https://abs.twimg.com/emoji/v2/... draggable="false" alt="😔" title="Nachdenkliches Gesicht" aria-label="Emoji: Nachdenkliches Gesicht">
Paying back this debt took me over 5 years. I kept accessing the Revolving Loan because I had access to it. Kept paying the minimum on the credit card because why pay more than was required. A year later got a car. I would get paid and 2 weeks later the money would be gone.
Fast forward a few years later. I buy my investment property as a pension for my parents (thread on the TL) which requires transfer fees etc, I use my Revolving loan to pay for fees associated buying property. A year after getting the house, a major life event happens.
I fall pregnant, my then boyfriend & I decide to move our wedding date a year earlier. To give our baby a secure home, we start hunting for a house, we decide to have a small traditional wedding ceremony & use the wedding money as a deposit for our house. New home needs furniture
We buy furniture and start our new life. During the process of getting married husbands car gets stolen and is never found,no insurance so we make peace that we now have 1 car. Decided to trade my small car for a bigger car to cater for our changing lifestyle and growing family
We are working professionals with a baggage of debt. Until a few years ago when we decided no more. We decided to live below our means, cut out a few expenses to pay extra & pay off all unsecured debt using the snow ball method. When we get bonuses, we pay debt.
Any salary increases we pay debt & keep our lifestyle the same, the road to paying off debt requires changing mindset & changing the way you do things. It& #39;s tough, requires missing out a few events, saying no to family gatherings, friends birthdays but you sleep better at night
