I gotta be honest, I was wrong on where I placed blame in that game. I think going man was a mistake once our starters were injured. They were running slants and smash concepts all damn day, but overall, the play calling wasn't terrible on defense.
Tony McRae was not prepared to play meaningful snaps. He got killed against everyone he was playing against. Games like this is why I wanted Isaiah Simmons in last year's draft. No this is not a shot at Okudah, I think he'll be our CB1 by the end of the season.
Play call was a sporadic issue on offense, but overall was something we could overcome. Just let 9 throw the ball. Keep him in the pocket where all his options are opens, rollouts hindered him and RPOs, designed runs and PA runs... just remove them entirely.
I hate vertical zone running. I'd love to see some misdirection from our OL with Swift in there. No matter which RB is in there, they know where the ball is going once they hear run is confirmed. I love Marv, but we really need to go WR in the first round.
Offensive Line played really really well against a really good defense. I loved some of the stuff they did with Hockenson, but why they stopped going to him in the 4th doesn't make much sense. If he had 10 touches this would have been a different game.
This was a team loss. Like I said, Trufant drop, TW3 Drop, Swift Drop, failed fumble recover, Prater field goal... All of those would have changed the outcome of that game. Collins in that game could have impacted the TEs. More zone in 4th might have helped the struggling CBs.
Overall, I'm actually pretty optimistic about this team after a 2nd walk through. It required everything to go right for the Bears to win that game. Truly if this team had all of their starters this game I think we would be talking about a blowout win not a loss.
KG would have had 10 catches for 120 yards and a TD in this game. Cephus can be Marvin, but he can't be KG. He's not winning jump balls in close coverage. He's not a safety blanket. I'm going to run a mock draft right now and post it to this thread.
