We celebrate Mokshagundam Visweswaraiah 's birth anniversary today as Engineer's Day. September 15. Everyone remembers him for the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam, the Bhadravathi Steel Works and the Mysore Soap Factory. But certain projects of his, lesser known have had lasting impact.
He was instrumental in designing the Ghat Road through the Seshachalam forests between the Tirupathi and the hill top temple town of Tirumala. Millions of devotees use this way to visit Lord Venkateswara each year.
Supervised the construction of the Himayat Sagar and Osman Sagar reservoirs to control the waters of the Musi river after the 1908 Floods of Hyderabad. These also provide drinking water to the city now.
He conceptualised the construction of the Island Breakwaters in the Visakhapatnam port, which were actually built around two sunken ships. These long breakwaters prevent the erosion and silting of Vizag harbour.
Three projects in three corners of the Telugu land. All vital, all lasting. We do owe a lot to this Dewan of Mysore.
