we can be proud of being from Guatemala, but must also advocate for those who are suffering at the hands of the corrupt government and US intervention, especially the indigenous communities.
a lot of us from the states simply take this day to honor and flag and commemorate our ~independence~, but keep in mind that right after we gained it, we began our relations with the US. almost 200 years of throwing BIPOC under the bus and stealing land.
honor the ** i can’t type. pero it is my first time to really celebrate, but I am also taking the time to really understand what guate has done to its own ppl. we can be prideful (respectfully) but also stand in solidarity with our ppl and try to help & spread awareness
i also understand the need to display nationalism, especially since our day is right before Mexico’s, and it is always mixed up, & we cannot seem to escape the misconceptions and unnecessary snide comments from some Mexican folks. BUT, let’s also take the time to learn & unlearn
I can’t quite put it into words, but @centamcollectiv has a great thread on what I’m referring to! pls read 🤍💙 that’s all I gotta say since I’m starting to see folks tweet their nationalism https://twitter.com/centamcollectiv/status/1305680888320188417
