major references to past movies & foreshadowing in endgame: a thread
the real hero - the score “the real hero” is used when nebula is helping tony while they’re in space & during tony’s funeral (the time he almost died vs the time he really did)
the fall from stark tower - loki throws tony from the tower in the avengers (2012) while tony jumps off from the tower himself in endgame
the elevator scene - steve fights hydra agents in an elevator in the winter soldier (2014) while in endgame he simply says “hail hydra” (related to that comic scene as well)
“i can do this all day” - the signature line of steve and the one that embodies how he never gives up in a fight despite how impossible it seems to others
inevitable fights - shown since the first avenger (2011), steve always faces his enemy in such way, emphasizing that there’s no going back and fight is inevitable
this is my choice/go ahead - the same score is used when steve asks peggy for a dance and when the plane crashes. when steve sees peggy in endgame, the heavy/depressing part of the score is used and when sam becomes cap, the upheat part of the score is used
the big three - contrasts their relationship in avengers (2012), in endgame the big three unites and fights against thanos, using tactics that they once used against each other. highlights their journey as teammates.
being worthy - steve rogers moves mjolnir in age of ultron (2015) and is able to lift mjolnir in endgame, proving he is worthy
the broken shield - in age of ultron (2015) steve dies in tony’s vision. his shield is broken in half and he is closing his eyes. in endgame, although he doesn’t die, his pose is very similar.
the stand - this is from comics, but this scene embodies who steve rogers is and can be translated as his last but the most powerful “i can do this all day”
“on your left” - an inside joke between steve and sam, first introduced in the winter soldier (2014). steve has always said it to sam but sam finally returns the favor in endgame as he comes out of the portal
the hug - in homecoming (2017), peter accidentally hugs tony and tony says this isn’t a hug, they aren’t there yet. in endgame, tony emotionally hugs peter first, relieved that his kid is alive once again
“we won” - steve says to tony (who almost died) in avengers. similarly, peter says “we won mr.stark” to lifeless tony
cheeseburger - tony says he wants a cheeseburger in iron man 1 (2008). in endgame, morgan also says she wants cheeseburgers, reminding happy of tony. (+happy has been with tony since iron man 1, so it feels more nostalgic)
stevebucky - “don’t do anything stupid till i get back” / “how can i? you’re taking all the stupid with you” first said in the first avenger (2011), they signify a long farewell between steve and bucky. in endgame, steve says it first since he’s leaving
the dance - steve and peggy promised to dance together at the end of the first avenger (2011) as steve makes his sacrifice. the dance continues to be foreshadowed and in the last scene of endgame, the dance finally happens
