Most likely the reason why both Jin and his father continuously failed to find the map of the soul, was because they both value their persona and ego too much to let go of them. Jin cares a lot about being a good person, however, his desire to present himself as a good person to
others led him to become dishonest with both himself and to his friends. When his friends wanted to know what was going on, he avoided answering his friends' questions because he didn't want to burden them with the trouble he had caused. He wanted to be a good person and
didn't want to drag his friends into his own mess, so he decided to try and fix everything on his own. Jin's father cares a lot about the reputation of both the family and himself. Most likely similar to Jin, he felt he had a persona and a reputation to uphold,
however, this may have led him to make the same mistake Jin is doing now, which is failing to stay true to himself and avoiding to face his shadow.

Both Jin and his father failed to realize that the key to finding the map of the soul, requires you to face & overcome your shadow
first. Only when you are able to accept all parts of yourself as a whole, can you finally open your eyes to the map of the soul.
