My dad has had a chronic illness since he was 9 years old. He has worked in a factory his entire adult life, until having violent seizures on the hard factory floor, and breaking almost every bone in his face, permanently physically and mentally disabled him at 50 y/o.
He took out loans on his 401k while working to buy small investment property. It’s his only income. We fought for his disability for 2 years, and finally won a few months ago. He is hospitalized several times a year, and his medications are hundreds each month.
He has never been without health insurance. Since losing his job 4 years ago, he pays for an ACA plan that increases every year and is closing in on 1000$ a month for a silver plan. Today he told me that he paid off $30,000 in medical debt. Over half of his life savings.
Because although he did everything right, always had health insurance, and has been making faithful monthly payments every month, university of Kentucky hospital sends him letters threatening to seize his property, and he’s tired of living in fear of losing everything.
Without his 5 seizure medicines and access to his neurology team, he would die. If he hadn’t bought investment property 15 years ago, he wouldn’t be able to get it. I hate this country and I cant wait to get him out of it someday.
