okay so i was going to drop this but since i saw that @sonic_charfacts doubled down on it i decided to do a little research and figure out exactly where the confusion surrounding this tweet came from.
i wanna start saying that i am not trying to start beef with the owner of this account. i truly appreciate what they do with this account. i only wanted to clear up the confusion for my sake, as well as for anyone else who might be interested in sonic trivia.
so, what exactly IS the issue i have with this tweet? well, i'll be blunt: mighty and ray are NOT members of team chaotix.
what do i mean by that? i mean that what this tweet does not take into account is the fact that "the chaotix" and "team chaotix" exist as two completely separate groups from two completely separate continuities.
when i say that, i am not just talking about the game/comic continuities. i'm ALSO talking about a difference between the american/japanese versions, as well as their classic/modern iterations, the latter being something we now know in game canon to be two separate dimensions.
for context, "the chaotix" refers to the cast of characters knuckles' is able to partner with in the game 'knuckles' chaotix'. "team chaotix", aka the chaotix detective agency, refers to the three person team made up by vector, charmy, and espio in 'sonic heroes'
the short story is that "the chaotix" is the classic version of this team, while "team chaotix" is the modern version. takashi iizuka has stated that vector, charmy, and espio were re-introduced as new characters for sonic heroes, making them different from the classic iterations
the chaotix we meet in sonic heroes are NOT the same ones we met in knuckles' chaotix. this is why mighty will not appear as a member of team chaotix. mighty was not in sonic heroes. mighty also NEVER knew team chaotix. mighty has never existed in the world of modern sonic.
this also applies to the archie comics as well. while their designs were updated, this group is still referred to as "the chaotix". they are still based on the classic version of this team. in order to remain consistent, the comics could not reboot these characters like games did
i think this difference is highlighted best in a particular plot in which charmy has a vision of him, vector, and espio as detectives in an alternate universe. this is not at all the modern team chaotix we know nowadays.
now, what this means for mighty and ray in the classic games is...up to interpretation, if i'm being honest. for ray, i'm going to go ahead and say no, since he never appeared in knuckles' chaotix, and has had no other affiliation with the chaotix team aside from the comics.
as for mighty....it's a bit tricker. on one hand i will agree with assertion that mighty is not TECHNICALLY an official member 'the chaotix', as the sonic news network does not explicitly list mighty as a member.
on the other hand, it feels weird to devalue mighty's place in that game. it's clear that the intent was to make these characters into a group of some kind, despite whether or not such a thing ever actually became official.
this especially goes for american fans, whose first introduction to mighty was less likely the obscure arcade game only found in select places in the west, and more likely with knuckles' chaotix and archie comics, which were more easily accessible.
in both the friendship of these characters is established clearly, so it's not necessarily wrong to assume mighty is a member of the chaotix. in the american version of knuckles' chaotix, the group are explicitly knuckles friends, rather than strangers caught in the same ordeal.
in any case, i think because of all these discrepancies with this lore there was lot of confusion regarding tweet, so i hope that at the very least this thread clears up those differences. please give @sonic_charfacts a follow as they've posted some real sonic trivia gems.
