The scene where they meet up to talk about their issue & Cairo becomes passive-aggressive just grates on my nerves bec it’s so realistic. It’s really painful to watch bec Gavreel’s desperation to be understood is palpable - his voice cracks, trembles. It’s sad. I feel for him.
What’s also heartbreaking is Cairo crying and drinking in the car - because he, too, is desperate. Except he isn’t really invested in understanding the issue, he simply wants to fix it - in a way, sweep it under the rug. He wants a quick solution to a complex situation.
You know what’s heartbreaking? When Cairo looks at his watch when they meet up. I found that really symbolic, especially later in the car, he drunkenly vocalises that “time didn’t stop” and “the world still keeps on turning” - I later realised on another rewatch that it’s +
all tied together. Cairo checked his watch as if to see whether time stopped when they met up, because people say when you’re around the person you love time stops. This is reflected when Cairo says “there’s no more music...no more magic”. He couldn’t find the person he fell for.
Because seeing Gavreel jealous, seeing a side of him he had convinced himself didn’t exist, made Cairo feel estranged. It made him feel like he was wading in the deep end of a pool he hadn’t even realised he was in.
I love the symbolism and motifs running throughout the show. The use of ‘lines’ to further reference “crossing the line”. First, the line separating their screens - split-screen - which divides them. They cross their first line when they meet in person.
Another line dividing them is the bench, and the pole behind which separates them almost completely. This is where they run into another road block - this time, they are unable to cross the line and meet each other halfway.
This here is a powerful scene. Cairo checking his watch - time hasn’t stopped, in fact, it’s probably moving quicker in his mind bec of the looming departure - his fear that the problem is far too big for them to fix in what little time they have left. And Gavreel, stopping +
right before the ‘line’ that divides them, wanting to be close to Cairo but scared of the new distance between them. Cairo has chosen to let the distance grow & so Gavreel, feeling misplaced, moves away. Like when he hesitates in going to see Cairo and Pearl has to encourage him.
Maybe I’m reaching but this here is Cairo physically taping a line. He’s sealing away the last of his possessions. This is the last line in their relationship - which is partially crossed when Leila allows Cairo to stay for a week with Gavreel. (Watch me analyse every line 😂)
You know how we said we wanted Cairo to take initiative? This. By stopping Gavreel from coming closer, he takes the situation into his own hands & takes the first step to reconciliation. Crossing the line, physically, by minimising the distance between them on his own terms +
& taking the first ‘step’ towards resolving the conflict; and emotionally, as he demonstrates his maturity by coming forward rather than allowing Gavreel to chase him. Cairo, in crossing the line, shows Gavreel that he is worth fighting for - just as Gavreel has always shown him
“I will fight for our love, wherever I go” - Cairo crossing the line and showing Gavreel that he, too, is worth fighting for. Fuck, I’m crying. This is beautiful.
Gavreel crossing the line? Relationships are based on mutual respect and putting in the same amount of effort. It isn’t take, take, take with no give. You have to give in the same amount of effort as the other person to really nurture your relationship. Gavreel shows this by +
crossing the line, which is also an indication of how they’re both willing to cross the line for one another and overcome their conflict through mutual trust and understanding.
