Most contemporary Catholic bishops and many Catholic intellectuals desire a "nice" church; one that only uses erudite language emphasizing charity, inclusion, and non-judgment in attempts to persuade without causing discomfort. They would have felt scorn for John the Baptist, /2
Jesus’s cousin who leapt in Elizabeth’s womb, and who was chosen by God to prepare the way for the Messiah. Perhaps they would have labelled him a raving, tiresome crank for his persistent calls to repentance and his public condemnation of King Herod’s adultery. /3
They’d have called the Baptist a locust-eating crackpot in animal skins and would have criticized his negative tone, pointing out that adultery is only one sin among other greater ones, then pointing to Herod’s accomplishments.
Remember this when today’s prophets are ridiculed.
