Former #PitchWars mentor coming in, because I'm seeing people are concerned about reading so many mentor wishlists to find the best mentor options for them. Are there are a lot of bios to comb through? Yup, we've got a lot of wonderful mentors. (1/7)
And here's a little fun fact: I actually don't read well on the internet. Back when I was a hopeful I scanned through, found the mentors that matched my genre, then went back and slowly read more. It took time, but it was worth it. #PitchWars (2/7)
Compare that to mentor me. Mentors read every query they get. Let's say they get 100 subs, and keep in mind some mentors get over 300. That's 100 pages of queries. And then they have chapters to read. Let's average chapters at 10 pages, though many are more. #PitchWars (3/7)
That's 1,000 pages. Do we read every chapter in full? No, but even 2-3 pages per submission is 200-300 pages. That's a LOT of reading. And I'm not even including any partials and fulls that will later be requested. #PitchWars (4/7)
Mentors are supposed to read all of these, when hopefuls don't want to read our fun, short, and often GIF filled bios. If you want mentors to read your queries and pages, you really need to do them the favor of reading their wishlists. #PitchWars (5/7)
And don't trust anyone else's breakdown of who is mentoring what, because I can assure you, they are wrong. Every year I mentored I got subs that did not match my wishlist at all. That's a wasted submission. Use it as a starting point, but do your research. #PitchWars (6/7)
Bottom line: please read the wishlists. (This goes for querying agents and editors, too!). Mentors are volunteers, donating their time, away from their words and families and lives. Respect them. #PitchWars (7/7)
