I& #39;m still livid about this...treating Latinas as if there were just animals to be sterilized.

This reminds me so much of Madrigal v. Quilligan, a case from the late 70s where Latinas who has been forcibly sterilized filed a class action suit against LA County Hospital. 1/x https://twitter.com/brooklynmarie/status/1305553553625243648">https://twitter.com/brooklynm...
In that case, a whistleblower much like today came forward with evidence that Latinas were being tricked, coerced, and forced into sterilization. Much like today& #39;s case, in Madrigal the women often had little to no grasp of English, leaving them vulnerable to coercion 2/x
and tricks and lies told to them by doctors and nurses.

Today& #39;s story, just as the Madrigal case, should alarm anyone who studies race, poverty, immigration, and reproductive justice, or just anyone who has a shred of a soul.

This just seems to be yet another chapter in horrific measures meant to control supposed Latina hyperfertility. This focus exists now with determining which immigrants will become a "public charge." I remember it growing up in Long Beach listening to discussions re: Prop 187. 4/x
This was happening in LA in the 60s and 70s as evidenced in Madrigal. This was happening in Puerto Rico for *decades.* Here& #39;s an extensive bibliography on sterilization in Puerto Rico. 5/x
