The first game of the new era of Chelsea was quite frankly disappointing but it’s nothing so grave to lose hope. We played a 4-2-3-1 with no wingers and the lack was felt throughout the game. Playing on the counter for most of the 90, with only 47% possession. (1/n)
Kepa pulled off a decent but expected save but then messed up a shot which should be saved by any top PL keeper. His cross collection from corners was terrible but nothing new here. (2/n)
Both our fullbacks look exposed, James got better after his goal but Alonso was repeatedly exposed by Lamptey throughout. Christensen was solid and probably will get the nod ahead of Zouma to play beside T. Silva who although was good wasn’t entirely confident on the ball. (3/n)
Kovacic was missed while Kante putting a shift in. Jorginho looked offbeat. Mount tracked down well but his offensive output was minimal. Loftus-Cheek was, to be brutally honest, a dumpster-fire. Havertz was off-tune and felt as if he was not playing his natural game. (4/n)
Havertz played as RW and didn’t get the ball at all during the f1st half (mostly due to RLC). When he did receive it he hit a few good passes but in the 2nd half he was poor. Remember, he is having to adjust to tracking back a lot which he didn’t do much at Bayer. (5/n)
More so he hasn’t had time to train with the team and the lack of chemistry was evident. On the positive side, his smoothness and confidence on the ball was visible in glimpses and gives us something to hope about. (6/n)
Werner was sharp and did everything that was asked of him. Making runs behind, pushing down the wing, etc. The lack of chances was down to the lack of creativity from midfield and RLC’s bad passing (again). Won the penalty for us through his burst of pace. (7/n)
All three goals happened in the spur of the moment. Mistake from Brighton, rocket from Reece and a deflection. Got the job done but we do need some creative boosts. Hopefully, this will happen with Pulisic, Kovacic and Ziyech coming in and Havertz playing as a natural 10. (8/n)
Barkley had an immediate impact and brought Kai into the game. Tariq Lamptey played brilliantly down the right terrorising Alonso. A rusty start was expected and it’ll take time for players to gel, but I’m confident we’ll be playing eye-catching football in a few GWs. (n/n)
