I'm gonna need folks to stop saying that even though JKR is a racist homophobic transphobic fatphobic garbage hole the books are still good and perfect and fine to sit the fuck down. I love(d) the books too. I get it. But all that shit she's got going on? It's in the text too.
It's okay if you didn't notice at first, but like... you can separate the art from the artist all you want but the art's still racist, homophobic, transphobic, and fatphobic too. You can't just pretend JKR isn't part of it so it's all fine. It's not fine.
I've found an enormous amount of love for myself in re-examining these texts as an adult and looking for these things. It's allowed me to undo a lot of the biases I learned from the books as a child and to process the antisemitism and homophobia that directly affected me.
I'm not going to tell you stop loving the texts, but... stop loving them uncritically. In my experience, reading critically allows me to love harder and better and without continuing to allow these unexamined issues to harm me and people that I love.
Adding here... if you're looking for a place to start with engaging critically with HP, I recommend the @ohwitchplease podcast. It empowered me ask the hard questions and I'm so grateful for the growth and learning it inspired me to pursue.
