Today in remote learning world:

Tchr ends class mtg, Invites any ?s to stay on.

My 1st grader asks to stay on as people are exiting because he wants to say something to her.

“Ms X, I have 2 moms....so sometimes you can say mom & dad but sometimes you can say mommy and mama”
I am grateful for a teacher who left open space and made my son feel comfortable enough to offer that.

I am grateful to my son who wants his family to be visible and represented in class and advocates for that.
I texted this story to my 11 year old niece

Her response: “Omg! That’s so cute we need to normalize lgbtq parents and I love how he asked his teacher to mention that!”

Y’all I didn’t know “normalize” at that age & we didn’t use lgbtq. I’m so grateful my babies get these words
Well this thread really took off! I want to say that while the language is important to not default to “mom & dad”, the other thing I think my son was asking for is representation. For our family to be seen. That means in books, school forms, on coloring sheets, in cartoons, etc.
