So Lovecraft Country's latest. Colorist, misogynoirist, queer-antagonistic and otherwise homophobic & fatphobic. For a show attempting to undermine H.P. Lovecraft's anti-Blackness, the failure here is colossal. Ruby's treatment is especially awful. Montrose's a close second.
There will be spoilers. You've been warned.

Folk have talked about the way gay sex is treated violently in Film/TV. They are right. That's the work of homophobia. Listen to them.
Fpr Montrose, this furthers his colorist treatment as violent & abusive (we last saw him slash the throat of a non-Black Indigenous 2S person). And, as usual, his partner is not dark or even unambiguously Black because that's all dark skin queer men seem to get in TV/Film land.
That's all pretty simple and basic, even though they attempt to subvert this treatment by showing him as loving later. But the damage has been done over multiple episodes imo.
Now Ruby. Man, I weep for Wunmi cuz she deserves better (whether she knows it or not) as a brilliant dark skin actress who is not thin. We knew fuckery was coming with that sex scene in the last ep but dear god...
Imagining a dark skin fat Black woman as embracing the magic of thin white womanhood. Chile...

And then enacting classist (I forgot to mention that above) aggressions on the thin dark skin Black woman? I'm disgusted tbh.
And then, being so careless as to reveal herself to the sexual abuser manager as the "n*gger b*tch" which only puts the only believable darkskin woman he knew of and assaulted in danger? Look. This writing is fucking awful. Careless in all its attempts to have any sort of depth.
The violence of the way she hurt the white manager juxtaposed to the violence of the gay sex we witnessed earlier...like...are the people making this show ok?
And then the music choices. Frank for the gay sex scene? Come on. This isn't an A24 flick. 🙄
I want this show to be over. It's so bad. And so many people think it's good, because people because genre and representation and symbolism.
TW: sexual assualt

OH I FORGOT THE WORST PART ABOUT RUBY.

Did you all peep how they justified the hiring of the thin, "unqualified" darkskin Black woman based on her desirability so that the manager could assault her & how Ruby "realized" as a witness to the assault?
Especially dangerous as it undermines Fat victims of sexual assault, asserting they are undesirable and therefore not able to be violated or should otherwise be grateful for sexual attention. This is especially true for dark skin Fat folk. How insidious tbh.
Now, think about the fact that this undermines that in the last episode Ruby was sexually assaulted. She thought she was consenting to sex with "William" when in fact she was having non-consensual sex with Christina. There's no acknowledgement of this violation in the episode.
The transphobia of it all, too. Lord. I hate it here.

@/thinglygrammar has had some great thoughts and commentary on this series.

I won't be watching anymore.
In addition to all the things I hate about this show, I am particularly tired of the "Black man can't explore his sexuality so he becomes violent" trope. https://twitter.com/Variety/status/1305637258196930568?s=20
