This. When you lived through 1,000 years of war (Europe) your expertise is in violence (guns, steel)

When you lived through 1,000 years of peace (indigenous Americans) your expertise is in sustainably growing your population in sync with nature (advanced food production)... https://twitter.com/lstruckm/status/1305461440724246530
...but it didn’t look exactly like European farming, so colonists took one look at America’s “untouched wilderness” and said, “we can control this with violence.”

In doing so, they destroyed advanced food procurement tech, product of unprecedented continental peace.
To help out my logical leap...

If you are constantly at war, you don’t worry about population growth as much, because excess population gets killed or dies of disease or you just kill other people to make room for your excess population (colonization)...
...if peace is your priority, ensuring that the population doesn’t grow too large, that you live sustainably within the bounds of the natural systems you have access to, is the primary function of your society.
