For Orthodox Christians, today is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Read the story--it's a wild ride. The "veracity" of which the historian in me sometimes struggles w/. But I think that's the point? THREAD
Sometimes the way we remember the past needs to be a little wild to remind us how audacious and persistent God is in His love for humankind. The past--our own and that of the world--is a dirty, messy, layered, forgotten, hard-to-read palimpsest.
How often do we let the sign of our salvation in this world get lost and buried under the rubble of our own futility and forgetfulness?
God is like the Archeologist of our souls. He will sift all our layers; He will churn up all our dust and our dirt and our forgetfulness to bring us back to Himself, the salvation He ushered into this world.
He will bring us face to face with the Cross He died on, and the crosses we too must bear to learn that kind of love. And when we still can't recognize it, He will find ways to show us and heal us.
... And just any old vague decorative Cross or story. He will bring us face to face with THE Christ. THE Cross. THE death that saved us.
And even if we lose that Cross again; even if our love for it gets plundered by the cynicism and blindness of this world, I'm sure He will do it all over again when we most need Him to.
In the meantime, smell some basil. And be reminded that Life is pungent and can thrive even in the saddest places.
Happy Feast Day! (Also Happy Fast Day. Because what better way to celebrate than to Fast. #Orthodoxy)
