I& #39;m horrified by the clips I saw of "Cuties": apart from the badness of *watching* it, it& #39;s worse that real little girls were sexualized by learning & performing these moves. That& #39;s wrong. But I can& #39;t cancel Netflix in protest, bc. I don& #39;t have Netflix. Which made me think: 1/
I don& #39;t have any streaming services: no Netflix, no Amazon Prime, no HBO, etc. None. If I want to see a film or TV show, I have to wait for it to come out on DVD & then buy, rent, or borrow it. THIS IS A GOOD THING and I recommend it to everyone. 2/
Paying for a streaming service like Netflix means I& #39;m automaticallyl paying for ALL their content, whether I approve of it or not. The only line I can draw is "cancel or not cancel", a nuclear option for protesting the very worst material. 3/
That means tacit approval of my subscription funding slightly-less-immoral material: explicit sex, glorified violence, etc, that doesn& #39;t quite hit the cancel cutoff. It encourages me to turn a blind eye to it & just focus on the good moral shows I enjoy from the service. 4/
The higher the quality of the good shows, the more tempting it is to find reasons to excuse or ignore the presence of the bad shows. And that means there& #39;s probably a slow upward creep in my tolerance for immoral material. 5/
Now consider NOT having any streaming services. The company only gets your $ for what you choose to buy/rent. OK, your $ supports the company overall (& all they produce) but you& #39;re not funding-by-inertia; you can always do a total boycott if need be. There are other benefits. 6/
Con: you can& #39;t watch things as soon as they come out.
Pro: that helps cultivate patience.
Con: you& #39;ll be out of the loop of immediate buzz with everybody watching it.
Pro: you& #39;ll have less pressure to watch stuff just to keep up with what everybody& #39;s watching. 7/

Con: might cost more to buy DVDs.
Pro: you& #39;ll be more likely to be thoughtful about what you watch. Do you *really* want to see that program enough to pay for it? And you might be motivated to find older films/shows at the library that you& #39;d otherwise ignore. 8/

Pro: you& #39;ll probably watch less TV... which means that it won& #39;t be a *default choice* for your leisure; you& #39;ll choose it because you genuinely want to watch something that you& #39;ll enjoy, not just because it& #39;s there. 9/

At various times I& #39;ve had Netflix or Amazon Prime. Haven& #39;t had Netflix for years and I let AP go a few months ago. Did I wish I could watch The Crown S3 right away? Yes! Will I survive waiting for it on DVD? Yes! 10/
