I think the content of this conversation is so rich and touched on a lot of important issues. It was rife with tension throughout, in that sense of both @wilfredchan and @jeffreychngo wanting something better but disagreeing in the way to act on what they see. https://twitter.com/sharonyamsy/status/1305489241900756993
I think the discussion of HK futurism / the (un?)importance of nation-building is really insightful. There’s a recognition that HK is caught between a world that’s splitting apart. It’s always sat on those fault lines, always been a floating city.
Now we’re considering a future where HK is afforded that equal stature under the nation-state system - but is that truly the best solution? Was that ever the CRUX of what was needed in order to actually improve socio-economic issues, give self-determination rights to HKers?
I really like what Jeffrey says from that practical aspect of taking action, working bipartisan, even if the optics leave him and Joshua open to demonization and misinterpretation, and rejecting China’s encroachment as a first step without wholeheartedly endorsing the US.
I think he is advocating for a different kind of transnational solidarity, or perhaps weaving between the fabrics of internationality and transnationality. He’s definitely in a position to act on that. But I wonder if it could also be a rich and delimiting position to think from.
