Hot take. I despise closed species with a passion. And I used to adore them when I was 12/13.
The amount of really rude closed species owners and rules is ridiculous. Like being unable to sell your closed species for more than you bought it for even if there’s extra art. Or burning other artists down for having a similar idea
Like when the species is something like “food dog” or “cat with a bell” or “animal that is part jelly” and if you make something similar you get blacklisted. Hm
Credit where credit is due, there are really unique and deep species. But like there was a really popular ARPG species that was really just big fluffy wolf???? Hm. And you can’t make a character with its body type without paying up or getting banned....? Ridiculous
OH OH OH and when you get a closed species that’s 4 years old and you don’t like the design anymore and want to spice it up, so you want to change the design a little. But turns out you have to pay $50 to change one marking or hire an official artist to change it??????
I totally get paying $2000 for an official design, that’s cool. I don’t mind, the designs were often times great. But I feel like 95% of closed species are stupidly stuck up over really small things. And it bugs me even more when the idea isn’t unique.
Sushi dogs were a really bad case because they’re legally trademarked/copyrighted. But they’re just short shibas or foxes with swirly bandannas and food themes. i guess the legal thing makes it so you can’t claim your food dog to be a “sushi dog” ? But like....... uh...
Soosh dogs had a lot of really bad rules and I remember defending them with all my might but now I’m sitting here like “my friend got attacked for making a salmon nigiri dog with a swirly bandana and fish cake”
I think ARPG closed/semi open species are some of the strictest regarding markings, body type, etc. I remember someone drew their closed species with a bigger tail and the design got revoked for breaking the rules cause a bigger tail was +$25
Same energy as costumes and micro transactions in video games imo.
