Some folks on #HamOnt Twitter have been asking how it's possible that some of our Councillors continue to get reelected. There's no one reason, but as someone who has run, here's a thread of reasons that stand out to me.
Name recognition. A lot of folks are elected based on their public persona, local celebrity status, or job title. Very little focus is put on actual community involvement and organizing or the qualifications required for making important decisions.
Money. Most incumbent campaigns are well funded. It's the difference between being able to do mail outs, having a campaign office, or paying for advertising.
Polling stations. Many polling stations haven't moved in decades despite the fact that many eligible voting populations have. Patterns are real.
Voter cards. Using often inaccurate lists, voting cards are sent out to indicate someone's entitlement to vote. Rather than sending a reminder to every Hamiltonian eligible to vote, cards are sent to those who are "on the list". It sets up a hierarchy.
Timing. The main election "season" (October) favours incumbent Councillors who are often free from their jobs (with pay) to campaign.
Timing. The Province insists on holding its election in the same year (June) which necessarily fatigues voters, and volunteers, and makes it difficult for everyone to push through and participate in the later municipal election. It's an afterthought for some, as a result.
Other candidates. Some Councillors wait as long as possible to declare their intention to run. This creates the impression that the incumbent won't run and that there will be an empty seat. A bunch of folks enter the race. It backfires and the challengers split the vote.
Lots of other reasons, but these are some that stand out. Would love to hear from others about their experiences. If you're thinking about running in 2022, it's a good idea to start thinking this stuff through now.
