Today we are releasing 2 great new #AmericasPledge reports, both on the surprising degree to which non-Federal action is driving action in the U.S: (1) A summary of past 4 years w/ @WeAreStillIn and (2) Analysis showing action continues despite COVID. Thread->
The first report was done with our partners in the #WeAreStillIn coalition. It shows the powerful wave of sub-national climate action that unleashed over the past four years. Report here: https://www.americaspledgeonclimate.com/we-are-still-in-to-deliver-americas-pledge/
These groups now account for over half of U.S. emissions, 65% of U.S. population and 70% of U.S. GDP - equivalent to the world’s second largest economy, roughly the size of China’s.
This report details the many ways that this action has grown over the past few years, and pulls together a set of statistics and figures detailing the magnitude of this action that covers all 50 states, and leaders from both parties and many other organizations.
The second report, “Delivering America’s Pledge,” reflects on this time of linked crises of climate change, COVID, systemic racism, and economic downturn. Our question was whether climate action continues despite COVID and the associated challenges. The answer is “Yes.”
“Delivering America’s Pledge” demonstrates that despite COVID, action in the U.S. continues to strengthen across four of five key areas: Electricity, Transport, Methane, and HFCs. Our assessment was that the effect on buildings was as yet ambiguous.
It details a number of concrete and significant actions taken in just the past 9 months.
Despite these continued actions, the economic impact on many non-Federal actors is severe. There are a number of areas, however, where Federal stimulus and policies could significantly bolster action.
Delivering America’s Pledge is available here — as are all of our reports, including last year’s report, Accelerating America’s Pledge, which has a broader aggregate emissions analysis and deeper dive into U.S. opportunities https://www.americaspledgeonclimate.com/report-delivering-on-americas-pledge/
The #AmericasPledge team is co-led by @CtrGlobSust at UMD and @RockyMtnInst with significant contributions from @WorldResources. Mike Bloomberg and Jerry Brown are co-Chairs, Carl Pope and Mary Nichols are Vice-Co-Chairs, and @BloombergDotOrg is a key partner.
Our fantastic team of authors for both reports: W Jaglom, C Frisch, K Kennedy, L Clarke, T Cyrs, J Lund, D Saha, J Feldmann, C Bowman, J O’Neill, M Campton, M Herbert, L Calle, A Light, P Bodnar, as well as partners Elan Strait, R Finnegan, many other WASI & CGS people, & myself
Also, thanks to Matt Damon, @MikeBloomberg, @JerryBrownGov, @PEspinosaC, @GovRaimondo, @ericgarcetti, @ViLyles, @melvincarter3, and @FawnSharp for participating in the launch the reports at the Bloomberg Green @climate Festival
