/5 As students go back to uni, spare a thought for the students supposed to be studying/working abroad for their 3rd year. Badly let down by @OfficialUoM saying that this "compulsory part of the degree" (prospectus) is now deemed 'not essential'. @timeshighered @guardian @nusuk
/5 Other universities have found a way to let students travel as they have deemed that it is an essential part of their degree (i.e. you can't become fluent in French without spending time in France), but @OfficialUoM is very much 'computer says no' on this.
/5 This also means @OfficialUoM is withholding Erasmus funding for 3rd year students by not letting them travel - which hits the least well-off students the hardest. Many students are not supported or helped by their parents.
/5 It will be a total waste of £50k of debt if they are not allowed to go abroad. Their degree/fluency will not be comparable to those whose universities found a way to let them travel. @OfficialUoM is offering an online course as the alternative. Not even close to equivalent.
/5 Conclusion: do not go to @OfficialUoM if you want to study languages. They do not have your best interests at heart. They will happily take your money but what has become clear is that they will not prioritise your learning.
