Dragon Ball Explaining Ki- Genki, Yuuki and Shouki
Ki is an important element in Dragon Ball, The concept itself is commonly seen in media from Wuxia Genre, and is borrowed from different east asian cultures primarily Chinese culture
To explain in detail: (1)
Quoting Toriyama: (Pic)
As we see in DB Genki simply means energy,While the other 2 Shouki and Yuuki are states of mind and emotions
All of them are interconnected and dependent on each other
To utilise Ki to the fullest its important to have a right balance between all the 3 (3)
In DB Genki is simply the amount of raw/pure energy within the individual , the amount of Ki an individual possess within himself, while the other 2 are terms relating to Ki control
We see it mutliple times in the show, It will be clear with an example from the Manga (4)
Yuuki and Shouki are the states of mind and emotions that help with Ki Control
We are aware that state of emotions play a big role in power levels and control (5)
A person full of energy(Genki) still may not be able to use it very well if he doesnt have control over his mind and emotions for example if he lacks courage(Yuuki), is afraid
One example of their interdependence from the manga is in the battle against Raditz,(6)
Kid Gohan doesnt have control over his emotions as a result he doesnt have any knowledge on how to utilise his massive power and energy correctly as also pointed out
Emotions like Intense rage, courage, desperation to help gave rise to the tremendous power stored within him-(7)
The fear he had against facing raditz that was limiting his potential was overcome by this other emotions for a short time allowing him to utilise his power to the fullest, another example is (Pic)
We now have a fair grasp on Yuuki and Genki and how they are interconnected(8)
Shouki is simple it means Sanity/Right Mindedness is the mind of the person. it means to have a composed and and right mind with control over your emotions,If the one doesnt have the right mind with then he loses his Shouki and is unable to utilise power to the fullest(9)
As seen in Gohan's case the boost in power he got from overcoming the limits on his emotions was temporary, He couldnt maintain or control it for a long time as he immediately turned back to the way he was before not being in the right state of mind,rather- (10)
he was lost in confusion to what happened to him and around him and going to his father as he had never been in such a situation before
There are several other examples where this could be applied in the manga Be it SSJ Goku VS Frieza, Gohan Vs cell and even Buu himself etc (11)
In conclusion all the 3 are important and interdependent
I know this has been done before in different ways, I tried to take a one example approach to state my view on this
