Good morning Twitter & fans of the Little Free Library we set up in honour of our son Altair. We have been overwhelmed by the response to our small project and are so grateful for all your offers of donations. I’m going to use this thread to tell you how you can support us 😊 1/x
First, a little bit about the boy this celebrates. Altair was conceived after a lot of IVF. He was stillborn at 21 weeks on 10 June 2017. These are his footprints. I’ve written more about him here for @tommys: https://www.tommys.org/our-organisation/help-and-support/baby-loss-stories/20-weeks-my-waters-broke-i-knew-i-was-going-lose-my-baby 2/x
Every year we celebrate Altair’s life by raising money for @tommys or doing something for our local community. This year we built our Library 3/x
We live in East London. It’s a brilliant, culturally mixed, exciting place. But there’s also a lot of child poverty (worse in recent years). Some children won’t have access to books. We live behind a primary school and in front of a mosque so A LOT of kids walk past our house 4/x
We set up this library in the hope that kids walking past could take home a book and get lost in it. Reading was always an escape for me when I was a kid and I’d like local kids to feel that rush of excitement because it’s the best feeling 5/x
We have been so moved by people’s offers to donate. The easiest way is by Amazon (sorry I know it’s evil). I’ve set up a wish list of books for children and young adults that explore diversity: https://www.amazon.co.uk/hz/wishlist/ls/2YG92CA5L2ZD7?ref_=wl_share 6/x
If you’d rather not give money to Amazon (understandable!) then please DM me and I can pass on my address. Or consider donating to one of these charities 7/x
Thank you for reading about our journey, for supporting our library and for remembering Altair. It can be hard as bereaved parents to feel that people have forgotten your child existed. Your tweets have made a difference ❤️ 10/10
