I'm from a small town outside of the city of Lancaster in Pennsylvania. Just recently protests have started because of the shooting of an autistic person of color whose body was left outside for four hours. A few things of note:
- Conservatives are saying Lancaster is an Amish city. That's just absolute nonsense. The Amish do travel and do business there, but it is mainly made up of minorities, and...it has electricity. There are street lights.
- When news of the shooting came out the circumstances were unknown and considering the systemic and statistically proven trend of police violence against people of color protests were inevitable.
- This all comes down to trust, and many law enforcement agencies throughout the country have failed to earn the trust of the communities they serve. In this case, officials did not provide details quickly and handled the crime scene poorly.
- The bodycam footage was released hours later, officials did not give details of the incident or meaningfully interact with locals and no explanation was given for the body lying in the street for four hours uncovered. Why were people left to look at their neighbor's dead body?
- Lastly on the issue of trust, how can we expect anyone to sit still & wait while people are dying? If you were under fear of being strangled & shot to death simply because of your skin color, what benefit of the doubt would you be willing to give & why wouldn't you protest?
