the dog bed economy which is eating away at competitiveness and sucking up all our top engineering talent:
1. Google makes algorithms for advertisements (targeted advertisements make up 70% of Google's business, the rest don't come close), which are then used by small business owners to sell their wares. like dog beds.
2. The dog bed seller lists his/her dog beds on Amazon to maximize rev from the dog beds. Thousands of talented engineers and data scientists use their gift to pore over data and code, to optimize the efficiency of the sale of dog beds.
3. The dog bed is delivered to the customer, who then posts his/her new dog bed on facebook. facebooks army of engineers have perfected the process of posting about dog beds. They have found the game theory optimal way to handle their users dog bed posting.
what does this mean? We're spending way too much of our talent on the dog bed economy and not nearly enough on the Tesla economy. The three firms mentioned in this thread have outsize revenue, and outsize ability to pay for talent as compared to their contribution to our society.
